A rebellion is brewing. Will you stand with them?
Spring 1201. Winter is over and those aligned with the rebel William Marshal have weathered a long year: exiled for voicing opinions against King John, returning from the holy land with little to come back to or simply so poor that the life of an outlaw is no hardship, since their meeting in Arundel their ranks have swelled a little but it is a rare fool who declares themself for Richard’s heir outright.
Some members of the secret rebellion returned home to villages or estates that still quietly supported them, waiting on news and the call to act. Others stayed in the environs of Arundel under the patronage of Lady Juliana, rebuilding her manor of Middleton using the money now available to her as Lady of Arundel castle.
Given a suggestion by Blind Jan, a beggar of the village, the Hoods scouted ahead to Gloucester to keep tabs on the cousin of Isobel de Clare, Gilbert Earl of Gloucester – a young man of uncertain loyalties. With information about the rebellion in his hands, young Earl Gilbert could make a strong alliance and oust his own family from their seats, or provide a significant foothold into the Welsh Marches, where other allies may be found for Marshal and Queen Eleanor.
When the news spread to the Hoods laying low in the Cotswolds and Forest of Dean that Earl Gilbert was celebrating St George’s Day with a hunt, inviting a variety of nobles of his acquaintance, Lady Arundel was able to secure a place on the guest list, along with a select retinue of her own…
